Images Recognition

I was reading recently an interview with Sébastien Marcel, a research scientist in Image Processing and Pattern Recognition applied to Biometric Authentication and Multimodal Interaction in IDIAP institute, Switzerland. Philipp Lensen asked Marcel about Face Recognition, and the topic was very interesting especially after that Google added face detection in Google Image search.

I'm very interested in images recognition, especially that image processing was part of my research project in my engineering school, but in that time I was analyzing fluid flows not faces. Analyzing faces, even at the research stage, is already available with the solution mentioned by Sébastien : Torch3vision, an open source machine vision library written in C++. There is nothing in PHP available according to him, but interfacing PHP with C++ isn't that difficult and I bet someone is already working on it.

Images recognition could be used for authentification, or to index image informations. The technique is amazing, and works very well. It can help to index billions of images and make search very easy, as Google did with indexing faces.

Now with the overwhelming of camera phones, webcams, and digital photography tools, we expect the number of images and photos over the web will be increasing exponentially. Images Recognition is the future of web image applications, maybe time to look around after it will be too late.

I just wanted to mention that this the post number 4000 in PHP Magazine Network !! Thanks Philipp and Sébastien for the interview.
